In Honor of the Placement of the Holy Relic of Mother Seton in the Altar of Sacrifice

Since the early days of the church, a connection was always drawn between the patron saint of a parish church and the sacrifice of the Mass. This connection was symbolized by the placement of a relic (a small piece of bone) of the saint in the altar of sacrifice. When the priest reverences the altar (kisses it) before Mass, is showing the intimate love he has for Jesus’ sacrifice which he (the priest) will offer at the altar during the Mass. When the altar consists of the Saintly relic the priest is further recognizing the Saint’s participation in the sacrifice of Christ and as an intercessor on behalf of the people.

  • On Sunday evening, October 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the church, I will share with you the role of Mother Seton as a sacrifice to Christ in her earthly life; the role that she has played as an intercessor of the faithful; and how her death was caught up in the love she had for the Mass. To place her relic in the altar at our parish church reminds us of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Faith and hope in the resurrection! We will conclude our session with the opportunity to be blessed with the Sacred Relic to seek Mother Seton’s intercession for our greatest needs.
  • Monday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. Mass, with the placement of a relic of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton being placed into the altar. The Homily will focus on the Death of Mother Seton and the process of her canonization. The Mass will be followed by a cake and ice cream reception!!
